One unique form of calligraphy that Mostafa Akhavass has revived and mastered consists of a technique that is performed by pressing the fingernails of two fingers, (the thumb and ring finger) into paper in order to distinguish and create patterns. This is a lost and forgotten art form dating to Safavid and Qajar eras. Akhavass has broadened this forgotten technique by creating compositions that incorporate watercolor in order to accentuate the extrusions. This same technique is used to create decorative borders that are painted within.
